Who is the Nurses Group?
The Nurses Group is made up of RNs, LPNs, nurse practitioners and nursing students who are active at the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley as volunteers or employees.

How large is the Chapter's Nurses Group?
Currently about 25 individuals make up the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley Nurses Group.

Why does Red Cross need volunteer nurses?
Nurses are well-educated professionals, trusted by their communities and possessing skills and knowledge that make them a natural constituency for Red Cross. Nurses play an important role in local, national and international disaster relief operations. In addition, nurses are needed to teach health and safety education courses, community safety and preparedness and senior initiative programs such as Lifeline, I'm OK and BenefitsCheckup.

What kinds of volunteer opportunities are there for nurses?
Red Cross nurse activities include providing direct services for disaster relief, representing the chapter at health fairs, military clinics and hospitals, tissue donor recruitment, teaching and developing of health and safety courses, acting in management and supervisory roles, serving in support functions for fund raising, marketing and public relations and functioning in governance roles at the local, state and national levels. How much time is required to be a nurse volunteer at my local Red Cross?
The amount of time you want to give to volunteering is a personal issue and can depend upon what area you choose to use your skills as a volunteer.

Nurse Enrollment Program: What is it? Why is it important to me?
Registered nurses who are graduates of an accredited school or college of nursing, currently licensed as a registered nurse in the state in which he or she volunteers and have given at least 20 hours of volunteer service to the American Red Cross may enroll in the American Red Cross Nurse Enrollment Program and be issued a pin that bears an individualized, engraved number on the back. The pin is a symbol of your commitment to providing service to your community in a most valued capacity.

How do I become a part of the national American Red Cross nurses' response team?
The American Red Cross has developed a program of preparedness training for individuals who wish to assist as Red Cross volunteers on national disaster relief operations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, forest fires or earthquakes.

Training includes first being active as a local Disaster Action Team member. Local Red Cross training is required and provided free of charge. Courses such as Introduction to Disaster Services, Overview of Disaster Health Services and Disaster Health Services Simulation are just a few examples of the classes available to you.

Can I get involved with Red Cross on an international level?
Yes. Recently the American Red Cross has become active in providing personnel to assist in international disaster relief efforts. This also has its own requirements and preparedness training geared specifically to international response. Nurses are considered one of the key group members for international response teams.
