Meteorologist Mark Shanaberger to Host Weather Safety Activities for Kids

The American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley invites the public to celebrate March is Red Cross Month at a community event on Saturday, March 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Lehigh Valley Mall in Whitehall.

At the event families can learn about the services that the local Red Cross provides to thousands of area residents each year, take a free Citizen CPR class, get a free blood pressure screening and do some weather experiments with Channel 69 Meteorologist Mark Shanaberger.

Starting at 11 a.m., Red Cross instructors will teach Citizen CPR classes to those interested in learning a potentially lifesaving technique. Hands-only CPR involves no mouth to mouth contact. The 30-minute classes, sponsored by Air Products, will be held in the Macy's Court on the first floor and is free to the public. Anyone interested is encouraged to sign up now by calling (610) 865-4400, ext. 247, or sending an e-mail to GLVPT@usa.redcross.org by March 10. Reservations will also be taken at the mall that day. Classes will be held at 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Space is limited.

From 1 to 4 p.m., families are invited to visit the "Red Cross Village" at the Promo Court to learn about the many services provided by the Red Cross. Individuals who pick up a "Village Passport" and get it stamped at each of the six booths will be entered in a $100 VISA gift card drawing. Free blood pressure screenings will be conducted by nurse volunteers.

Channel 69 Meteorologist Mark Shanaberger will host an interactive weather safety program for kids in the Elevator Court, first floor. Children will learn about floods, lightning, tornadoes through demonstrations, activities and take-home materials. The program will be held at 1:30 p.m., 2 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. No reservations are required.
