The American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley is holding a drawing contest for students in first through sixth grades in Lehigh, Carbon, and Northampton counties to commemorate “March is Red Cross Month.” Students of public, private, parochial, and home schools are eligible to participate.

“March is Red Cross Month” is a time to honor and thank the members of our Red Cross family and remind people that the Red Cross is where Americans can make a difference. Through this contest, the American Red Cross hopes to educate teachers and students about the work of this humanitarian organization. Age-appropriate information is available at www.redcrosslv.org to help children and educators learn more about Red Cross.

To participate in the drawing contest, students should complete artwork that addresses the topic: “American Red Cross helps people during disaster.” The submitted work must be original and drawn on 8 ˝ x 11-inch paper and may be done in the student’s artistic medium of choice (crayon, marker, paint, ink, pen, etc.) Posters must be two-dimensional — no glitter, construction paper, stick-ons, etc., may be attached to the paper. No stencils or copyrighted characters may be used.

One winning entry will be selected from each grade level. Winners will receive a valuable prize, have their artwork framed and displayed at the local Red Cross chapter, and will have their names featured in the chapter’s newsletter. Winners will be notified by March 21, and their names will be announced during a March 29 Red Cross community event at the Lehigh Valley Mall in Whitehall.

A selection of entries will be displayed in the Lehigh Valley Mall from March 24 to March 31.

The deadline for artwork submission is March 17. Each student is permitted to submit only one piece. All entries become the property of the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley and will not be returned. The American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley reserves the right to reproduce all posters in whole or in part, and to use the names of the winners in public announcements of the contest. Employees of the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley and the members of their immediate families (residing in the same household residence) are ineligible to participate or win.

Submissions may be mailed to American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley, 2200 Avenue A, Bethlehem, PA 18017, or dropped off at the Red Cross Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The student’s name, address, school, grade, and home telephone number must be included on the back of the artwork.
