The Red Cross shelter at the Hanover Township Community Center will remain open until noon for residents displaced by a sink hole yesterday at the Bridle Path Woods apartment complex in Hanover Township.

Affected residents are encouraged to go to the Red Cross shelter at 3660 Jacksonville Road for information on additional resources, emotional counseling, snacks, beverages and lunch. Last night (3/11) one resident spent the night at the facility.

“Red Cross disaster workers have been on the scene since 5 a.m. yesterday providing for the immediate emergency needs of displaced residents,” said Cordelia E. Miller, director of emergency services for the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley. “Nearly 50 people sought out shelter at the Hanover Township Fire Company – the first shelter site – where they received a hot lunch and dinner, beverages, emotional counseling, medication replacement and up-to-the-minute information.

“Individuals who were not allowed by authorities to go back into their apartments to retrieve personal items were given vouchers by the Red Cross for clothing and medication replacement,” Miller stated.

The American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley serves more than 690,000 residents of Carbon, Lehigh and Northampton counties. Last year the Red Cross provided health and safety education training; Lifeline, a personal response service for seniors; and emergency relief to more than 23,000 Greater Lehigh Valley residents.
