A dozen National Penn Bank employees will be slipping out of normal 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. business attire and donning clothing such as jeans, T-shirts and shorts on Tuesday, Sept. 11. And, instead of reporting to their normal work location, they will gather at the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley as volunteers for this year’s United Way Day of Caring.

Day of Caring is an annual event celebrating the spirit of volunteerism and launching the fall campaign for United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley. It offers employees and donors the opportunity to see firsthand the essential services provided by United Way-funded agencies and the needs of these agencies.

National Penn Bank employees will perform tasks such as painting, landscaping and other facility maintenance projects to help the Red Cross. “Our group enjoys the physical aspects of Day of Caring work,” stated Kurt Kershner, community office and cluster manager at the bank. “We’ve been volunteering for a number of years.”

In addition to the physical projects, bank employees will have an opportunity to learn about the lifesaving programs and services of the Red Cross, meet employees and volunteers, and tour the chapter’s facilities, including the Disaster Operations Center.

The American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley serves more than 680,000 residents of Carbon, Lehigh and Northampton counties. Last year the Red Cross provided health and safety education training; Lifeline, a personal response service for seniors; and emergency relief to more than 23,000 Greater Lehigh Valley residents.
