From breakfast bars and cookies to hot dogs and beef stew, American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley volunteers have been busy since early morning providing nourishment to area firefighters and other emergency personnel on the scene at Bethlehem's Silk Mill fire.

Coffee, water, Gatorade and hot chocolate was being consumed by the gallons as firefighters alternate breaks from the stubborn blaze.

"You guys [Red Cross] are great," said one Bethlehem fireman. "You are always here when we need you. We really appreciate what you do for us."

Red Cross volunteers were called shortly after 5:30 a.m. to set up a feeding site. The chapter's emergency response vehicle, equipped with stove, refrigerator, microwave and coffee pots, serve as a mini feeding station for emergency workers. A second shift of Red Cross volunteers were sent out at 3 p.m. to relieve those volunteers who have been working since the early morning.

"We will continue to stay on the scene as long as needed," said Nina Johnson, manager of disaster services for the local chapter. "Our volunteers take great pride in supporting our emergency workers. And, if necessary, Red Cross is ready to assist families living near the area who may need our help."

The American Red Cross is not a government agency. All Red Cross disaster assistance is an outright grant. It is made possible through the generous voluntary contributions by the American people of time, materials and money. The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

The American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley serves more than 660,000 residents of Carbon, Lehigh and Northampton counties. Last year the Red Cross provided health and safety education training; Lifeline, a personal response service for seniors; and emergency relief to more than 20,000 Greater Lehigh Valley residents.
