"Red Cross programs and services in Carbon County have increased three-fold since we officially opened our doors nearly four years ago," said Carl Kist, manager at the Lehighton office. "We have our volunteers to thank for that. Volunteers are the heart and hands of this organization.
"In addition to the yearly blood drives that Red Cross hosts, we're teaching residents the lifesaving skills of first aid, CPR and AED. Teens are learning how to become responsible babysitters through our Babysitter's Training program. Plus, Carbon families are taking comfort in knowing that Red Cross is there after a fire or other emergency to provide a safe place to stay, clothing and food."
It takes an army of dedicated individuals to run an organization that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. About 100 Carbon residents volunteer for the Red Cross, but there is a need for more.
"We are fortunate to have such a wonderful, caring group of volunteers in this closely knit community. They are very passionate about the Red Cross and give tirelessly to help others," said Bob Duld, director of volunteer and community services. "To serve the citizens of Carbon to our best ability, however, we need to add to our current volunteer ranks."
While volunteers are welcomed in all areas, individuals are particularly needed to help families affected by fires or other emergencies by providing basic emergency needs such as food, clothing and a safe place to stay. In addition, volunteer instructors are needed to teach first aid and other lifesaving courses.
"As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to choose how your interests and talents can contribute to the benefit of your neighbors," said Duld. "And, by being there when you are needed, you'll know that your help really matters." Current volunteers will be available at the open houses to share their experiences with interested individuals. Light refreshments will be served and door prizes will be given away.
