American Red Cross to Bestow National,
Local Awards at Dec. 1 Event

The American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley will hold its Annual Meeting Awards and Recognition Event on Thursday, Dec. 1, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Allentown Symphony Hall.

Red Cross Chairman Robert McGovern will present brief remarks about current Red Cross activities prior to the awards presentation.

The national Clara Barton Honor Award for Meritorious Volunteer Leadership will be presented to Alan Ellis, disaster services volunteer. Ellis, a resident of Barto, Pa., has been a local and national disaster volunteer for four years. The Clara Barton Honor Award recognizes meritorious service in volunteer leadership positions held over a period of years. Recipients of the award are inducted into the Clara Barton Honor Society, the highest award the American Red Cross bestows on volunteers.

The Community Project Award, which is given to businesses or organizations for having donated significant time, talent and financial resources to support a major improvement project to benefit the work of the local Red Cross, will be presented to the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners of America Local 600 of Bethlehem, and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers No. 375 of Allentown.

Swim-In-Zone of Center Valley; Treatment Trends of Allentown; Pocono Whitewater Ltd., of Jim Thorpe; and H.T. Lyons of Allentown will receive the Workplace Recognition Award for providing Red Cross training in lifesaving skills to their employees.

In addition, several South Mountain Middle School students will be recognized for their initiative in taking Red Cross first aid and CPR training to benefit their school.

Former board member Bob Gedney and his wife Mary will be recognized for their contributions as founding leaders and co-chairs of the Clara Barton Society since 2003. The society recognizes donors who give $1,000 or more annually to the local chapter. Board member Betsy Torrence and her husband Sam will be introduced as the new co-chairs of the society.
