At 10:45 p.m. (9/18), the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley opened a shelter at St. Anthony’s Youth Center, 901 Washington Street, Easton, so families residing along Route 611, Delaware Drive could seek overnight refuge from the rising water.
This is the second shelter opened tonight for residents along the Delaware River. Earlier this evening, the Red Cross opened a shelter at the Lower Mt. Bethel Township Building, 6984 Route 611, Lower Mt. Bethel.
Red Cross volunteers are at the shelters providing cots, blankets, beverages and snacks as families prepare to settle in for the night.
A total of five shelters were open today. Three – Calypso Elementary School, Nancy Run Fire Company and Donegan Elementary School – were closed by 8:35 p.m.
It is not known at this time how many families will be able to return to their homes on Sunday (9/19). Red Cross officials are working with emergency management and local police and fire departments to ensure the safety of individuals affected by the flooding.
Anyone affected by flooding in Carbon, Lehigh and Northampton counties, should call the local Red Cross at (610) 865-4400.
