The area’s blood supply is critically low at this time, forcing American Red Cross Blood Services, Northeastern Pennsylvania Region to bring blood products in from other parts of the country. The Memorial Day holiday weekend signals the unofficial start of summer when blood donations usually drop. Red Cross officials are urging the public to give blood now.

“There is less than a half day’s supply of some blood types available,” said American Red Cross Blood Services, Northeastern Pennsylvania Region CEO Donald R. Fipps. “I am asking anyone who is able to give blood to come to a blood drive now.” The American Red Cross is asking everyone who is at least 17 years old, who weighs at least 105 pounds, and who is healthy to please give blood and help build the area’s blood supply to a safe level.

The bloodmobile will visit the following locations in Carbon County during June:

Wednesday, June 16, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Gnaden Huetten Conference Center, Sixth & Iron streets, Lehighton;

Thursday, June 24, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Jim Thorpe Memorial Hall, West 10th Street, Jim Thorpe;

Friday, June 25, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Nesquehoning Recreational Center, W. Railroad Street, Nesquehoning; and

Saturday, June 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Palmerton Borough Hall, 455 Delaware Avenue, Palmerton. For more information, call the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley at (610) 377-2100 or call 1-800-GIVE LIFE.
