Neither the heat nor humidity could keep Vincent Yaich and Robert Marzen of Jim Thorpe from doing their good deed on Aug. 1 -- donating blood to the Red Cross. In addition to the satisfaction one gets from helping to save another's life, Yaich and Marzen were recognized for reaching personal blood donation milestones. Yaich has donated 10 gallons of blood; Marzen, 12 gallons. Each received a special Red Cross pin acknowledging their level of giving.
"Considering the oppressive heat and humidity, we were pleased to see so many people turn out," said Carl Kist, Red Cross branch manager. "Our goal was 70 units of blood; we received 63. I'd like to thank everyone who donated, the many dedicated Red Cross volunteers who helped, and Jim Thorpe Market who supplied doughnuts, juice, coffee and soda."
Jim Thorpe Market of 1 River in Jim Thorpe has pledged to supply refreshments for Red Cross blood drives in the community for the remainder of the year. "We are very grateful to the folks at Jim Thorpe Market for their generosity," Kist said. "It's wonderful to see the community come together for such a good cause."
First-time blood donors included Jessica Keiser and Kimberly Ohl.
Red Cross volunteers at the blood drive were: Virginia Dunbar, Beverly Delay, Marion Decker, Irene Mann, Lillian Popek and her daughter Rachel Popek, Judy Smith, Edith Smith, Irene Dedinsky, Connie Herman, Pauline Lorchak and Susan Swavely.
