John Weaver, disaster mental health services volunteer for the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, will leave for New York City tomorrow (10/5) to assist in relief efforts related to the World Trade Center disaster.

Weaver's duties will include, in part, meeting the mental health needs of families, disaster relief workers, and Red Cross staff affected by the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.

Weaver resides in Nazareth and is a mental health professional at the Northampton County Mental Health/Mental Retardation office. He recently returned from Somerset County as part of the American Red Cross Aviation Incident Response Team providing mental health support for family members and rescue workers at the site of a Sept. 11 plane crash.

Weaver is the second local Red Cross volunteer to be called to New York. Joan Steinmetz of Orefield has been in New York since Sept. 22 serving as a Red Cross records and reports specialist. Her duties are to compile, record and disseminate certain Red Cross forms and reports; obtain and distribute accurate data about the progress of Red Cross relief efforts and maintain security and confidentiality of paperwork.

The Lehigh Valley Chapter Red Cross serves more than 660,000 residents in Lehigh, Northampton and Carbon counties. Last year the Red Cross provided health and safety education training and emergency relief services to more than 15,500 greater Lehigh Valley residents.
