The Lehigh Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross will once again be the recipient of funds raised through Lehigh University's annual Sigma Nu Dance Contest.
For almost 10 years, the Sigma Nu Fraternity Pi Chapter has coordinated the annual dance contest to benefit the local Red Cross. This year's event will be held Thursday, April 26, at 8 p.m. in the parking lot of Sigma Nu Fraternity on Lehigh University's Bethlehem campus. The public is welcome.
"For years, the students at Lehigh University have embraced our organization," said John Hughes, executive director of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross. "The Red Cross and the entire Lehigh Valley community are very fortunate to have the support of such a fine group of students. The funds raised through the dance contest will be used to provide disaster relief services and health and safety education right here at home."
"We, the brothers of Sigma Nu, strongly support the work of the American Red Cross," said Dominick Fiorilli, Sigma Nu Fraternity member and co-coordinator of this year's contest. "As part of our responsibility to the college and our community, we are pleased to hold this annual event."
The dance has grown to be the premier event of Lehigh University Greek Week, drawing nearly 2,000 people. This year organizers are expecting about 25 team entries that will represent various Lehigh University student organizations and will compete before a panel of judges for prizes.
In addition, the dance coordinators have also invited the general public to help in sponsoring the event. Sponsorship dollars range from a "Friend" sponsor which entails a $25 dollar donation to a "Champion" sponsor which is a $500 dollar donation. Additional sponsorship levels include $50 and $200. In return, sponsors will have their name recognized, in accordance to their donation, in various medias including T-shirts, Lehigh University's school newspaper, flyers and banners.
"Thousands of dollars are raised by fraternities and sororities each year for charity during Greek Week," said Jeff Costanzo, Sigma Nu Fraternity member and co-coordinator of the dance. "Our students take great pride in supporting the community. This is just one of the many ways that fraternities and sororities give back to their community."
Radio station WZZO will host the contest. Food and beverages will be sold. In the event of inclement weather, the contest will be held at Lehigh University's Grace Hall.
