| Runners Take Great Strides to Raise Money for American Red Cross | ![]() |
A record 807 runners – ages 13 to 71 – took great strides today (7/15) in helping raise more than $17,000 to benefit the Lehigh Valley Chapter, American Red Cross.
One hundred fifty-one relay teams and 70 iron division runners (from 10 states) took part in the 11th Annual Lehigh River Relay Run that began at 6:45 a.m. at Canal Park in Allentown, threaded through Bethlehem, and ended in Easton’s Riverside Park. Leg distances varied from 3.38 miles to 5 miles. Iron division participants ran the entire 23 miles.
"When disaster strikes, money from events like this helps provide families with immediate emergency needs," said John Hughes, executive director of the Lehigh Valley Chapter Red Cross. "That assistance may be in the form of a safe place to stay, meals, groceries, clothing, shoes and coats. Last year we assisted 651 Lehigh Valley residents who were affected by a disaster at their home."
About 100 Red Cross volunteers were on the course helping with setup, handing out water and PowerAde to the runners; providing direction, timing and recording, managing each race leg, assisting with first-aid if needed, and tallying the results.
Overall relay team winner: Shippensburg Alumni: 1:56:10; overall iron division runner: Jacquine Winkley: 2:22:52.
NOTE: Full results will be available on this site by July 24.
NOTE: All finishers of the Iron Division run received medals. If you did not get yours, please e-mail Tamantha Yanders with your name, address and phone number.
