Were you a volunteer Red Cross nurse? Do you have a Red Cross-issued nurse's pin? Do you currently live in the Lehigh Valley? If you can answer yes to these three questions, the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross wants to know.

Red Cross is updating its historical information and wants to add the important contributions of dedicated volunteer nurses who, since 1909, eased human suffering in their communities and around the world. Volunteer Red Cross nurses who have received the Red Cross-issued nurse's pin should call or E-mail Ruth Shiers at (610) 346-8939, rshierspa@aol.com; or Bob Duld at (610) 865-4400, ext. 229, duldr@usa.redcross.org.

Registered nurses who are graduates of an accredited school or college of nursing, currently licensed as a registered nurse in the state in which he or she volunteers and have given at least 20 hours of volunteer service to the American Red Cross may enroll in the American Red Cross Nurse Enrollment Program and be issued a pin that bears an individualized, engraved number on the back.

Nurses have always been a cornerstone for the provision of services by the American Red Cross. Today more than 40,000 nurses continue to be involved in paid and volunteer capacities at all service areas throughout the American Red Cross. Red Cross nurse activities include providing direct services for health fairs, military clinics and hospitals, tissue donor recruitment, teaching and developing of health and safety courses, acting in management and supervisory roles, serving in support function for fund raising, marketing and public relations and functioning in governance roles at the local, state and national levels.

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. The Lehigh Valley Red Cross serves more than 620,000 residents in Lehigh and Northampton counties.
