The Lehigh Valley American Red Cross invites the public to a brown bag lunch series focusing on health and safety topics like "Managing Stress," "Ergonomics" and "Back Injury Prevention."
Six, one-hour sessions will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the American Red Cross building on Avenue A in Bethlehem. Cost per person is $6 per session, $18 for three sessions or $33 for six sessions. Sessions will be taught by Red Cross professionals; participants are invited to bring a lunch.
The schedule is as follows:
Ergonomics - Jan. 15, 2001 This session will give individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to identify and reduce the risk of injuries associated with repetitive strain or damage to muscles, tendons, nerves and joints.
Slips, Trips and Falls - Feb. 8, 2001 About 20 percent of all nonfatal occupational injuries and workman's compensation claims are associated with slips, trips and falls. This session will give individuals the knowledge and skills to identify and reduce the risk of these types of accidents.
Managing Stress - Feb. 22, 2001 Every one of us experiences stress at some point in our lives - when we work, travel or spend time with family and friends. This session will help you recognize the causes and signals of stress and develop personal strategies for managing stress.
Your Heart Matters - March 15, 2001 Coronary heart disease can limit opportunities to work productively and enjoy a full personal life with family and friends by significantly reducing your life span. This session will help you recognize the signals of a heart attack, identify factors that may leave you at risk for coronary heart disease and help you develop a plan to reduce your risk of suffering from the disease.
Back Injury Prevention - April 5, 2001 Recent studies have shown that four out of five adults will suffer from back pain at some stage in their lives. This session will help you understand the anatomy of the back and the causes of back pain and help you identify and reduce the risk factors for back injury. Individuals also will learn how to perform simple exercises for stretching and strengthening neck and back muscles to prevent back injury and identify ways to change personal habits to avoid back injury.
Workplace Violence Awareness - April 26, 2001 About 2 million assaults and threats of violence occur each year in the workplace. This session will help you recognize the categories of workplace violence, identify warning signals of potential workplace violence and reduce your risk of becoming a victim of workplace violence.
