WORKPLACE HEALTH & SAFETY TRAINING PROGRAMS

The American Red Cross is committed to being your first choice for safety training. As the industry leader, we’re dedicated to bringing you the latest, most reliable skills in the way that best supports your organization.

Designed to fit your schedule and your budget, it’s an inexpensive way to increase health awareness, reduce the risk of injuries and accidents on the job, and potentially save lives.

American Red Cross workplace safety training meets the first aid guidelines identified by OSHA, as well as the Emergency Cardiac Care Guidelines.

Each course combines lectures, interactive video demonstrations, discussions, and hands-on skills training that can be conducted at your facility or ours 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Normally, a minimum of 8 individuals is required to conduct group training.

Choose from the following core courses and combine them with injury control modules and other options to create the optimal training program for your company:

WEB-BASED BLENDED LEARNING

Lifesaving skills are just a click away with Web-Based Blended Learning. The first portion of the training is completed online, allowing each course participant to take the training from any PC (Windows-based) computer with Internet access. For the second part of the training, a Red Cross instructor will conduct the approximately two-hour skills session at your place or ours!

Web-Based Blended Learning allows participants to learn at their own pace and convenience, and is as effective as classroom-only training. Whether you're new to Red Cross training or are already certified, Web-Based Blended Learning is for you. This new training option works well in environments with easy access to computers … businesses, schools, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, etc.

Courses currently available through the new Web-Based Blended Learning are:

  • First Aid
  • CPR - Adult, Child and Infant CPR
  • Automated External Defibrillation (AED) - Adult and Child
Certification requirements are as follows:
  • Complete online session
  • Correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions on the final exam. Note: Participants must successfully complete the online session before beginning the Skills Practice and Assessment Session.
  • Attend and participate in the skills practice and assessment session for the course
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills

STANDARD FIRST AID with AED SKILLS (6.5 Hours)

This is the most comprehensive of the workplace safety training classes. In this daylong session, students will master the skills of rescue breathing, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for adults, handling choking emergencies, and learn the use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). They will be instructed to respond to poisoning emergencies, control bleeding, and understand when to move a victim. Participants will be able to give first aid to burn victims; eye and nose injuries; bites and stings; fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains; strokes; seizures; heat and cold exposure, and diabetic emergencies.

Certification: Standard First Aid - 3 years
                   Adult CPR/AED - 1 year

STANDARD FIRST AID (5.5 Hours)

This course provides hands-on first aid training consistent with OSHA guidelines, plus CPR training and information on the role of AEDs in emergency cardiac care. This course will give participants the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for injuries and illnesses until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. Similar to the above course except without skill learning sessions on the AED.

Certification: Standard First Aid - 3 years
                   Adult CPR - 1 year

ADULT CPR/AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATION (4.5 Hours)

Focusing on typical automated external defibrillator equipment, this course will prepare individuals in the workplace to provide care for breathing emergencies, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and use an AED for victims of sudden cardiac arrest.

Certification: Adult CPR/AED - 1 year

ADULT CPR (3.5 Hours)

Designed for employees who need CPR training only. This course combines lecture and video demonstrations with hands-on CPR skills practice on manikins. It also includes information on the role of AEDs in emergency cardiac care.

Certification: Adult CPR - 1 year

FIRST AID (4 Hours)

This half-day course teaches basic first aid skills for a variety of injuries and illnesses. It does not include training on breathing and cardiac emergencies.

Certification: First Aid - 3 years

PREVENTING DISEASE TRANSMISSION (2 Hours)

This course is designed to train employees regarding safe workplace practices, to report and follow-up on employee exposure to infectious materials, and to reduce the number of employees who contract bloodborne infections such as hepatitus B virus and human immunodeficiency (HIV) from the worksite.

OPTIONAL INJURY CONTROL MODULES

These 1-hour sessions on current workplace topics help you pack more training into the workday. These modules can be scheduled as add-ons to your current workplace training courses or you can conduct a series of 1-hour modules separately as part of a continuing safety effort.

Each module includes a self-assessment to help employees recognize risky habits, plus skill demonstrations and lively discussions to reinforce practical prevention tips.

ERGONOMICS

Musculoskeletal disorders, called MSDs, are injuries often associated with repetitive strain or damage to muscles, tendons, nerves, and joints. Learn how to identify and reduce the risk of MSDs. By improving posture, rearranging work areas, using proper tools, and doing simple exercises, participants can learn how to reduce these injuries

SLIPS, TRIPS, & FALLS

Some slips, trips, and falls cause only minor bumps and bruises. However, they can also cause serious injuries. Learn to recognize how safety awareness can help reduce one of the leading accidents in the workplace. Topics include the causes of accidents, remedies for common hazards, plus practical advice on shoe selection, ladder safety, etc.

BACK INJURY PREVENTION

Some people have back problems because of their physical conditions and lifestyle choices. Others are prone to injury due to working conditions. Participants will learn how posture, stretching, exercising, and safe lifting skills can reduce the risk of injury.

WORKPLACE VIOLENCE AWARENESS

Preventing violence in the workplace involves teamwork. Realistic scenarios help participants to recognize impending workplace violence and learn ways to ensure their personal safety and security and reduce their chance of becoming a victim.

MANAGING STRESS

Recognizing the signals of stress can help you to understand how much stress you are feeling and how it affects both your work and home life. Learn to develop personal strategies for managing stress with tips on time management and relaxation techniques.

YOUR HEART MATTERS

Prevention today is critical in reducing the likelihood of experiencing a heart attack in the future. Learn to identify your own risk factors and take steps to adopt healthier behaviors to reduce the possibility of coronary heart disease.

FAMILY CAREGIVING MODULES

The purpose of the Family Caregiving Program is to help participants gain an understanding of what is involved in caring for a loved one and know how to provide that care through 1-hour modules covering topics such as personal care, nutrition, home safety, and others.

GENERAL CAREGIVING SKILLS

The purpose of this module is to inform caregivers how they can measure their loved one's vital signs such as pulse, respirations, and body temperature and how to assist with medications. They will understand the importance of measuring of vital signs and the proper administration of medications.

ASSISTING WITH PERSONAL CARE

The purpose of this module is to inform participants how to assist their loved one with personal care such as bathing, grooming and using the toilet. Participants will learn caregiving techniques when assisting with mouth care, grooming, dressing and undressing, bathing, shampooing and toileting.

CARING FOR THE CAREGIVER

The purpose of this module is to prepare individuals who are family caregivers to care for their own health while caring for a loved one. Participants will learn how to recognize the signs of caregiver stress and identify ways to make time for themselves. They will also learn how to access help from community organizations such as respite care.

CARING FOR A LOVED ONE WITH ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE OR DEMENTIA

The purpose of this module is to inform caregivers how to care for a person with Alzheimer's disease or dementia as well as to handle common behaviors associated with the disease. The caregivers will understand how to provide for a person with Alzheimer's disease or dementia including daily activities such as bathing and eating. Participants will also learn to recognize the signs of depression and understand that a person who cares for someone with Alzheimer's disease or dementia is at risk for depression
