The Robert R. Smith Legacy Society

Founded in 2009

Named for Robert R. Smith, a World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient who bequeathed $1.8 million to our chapter (the largest known bequest in our chapter's history), The Robert R. Smith Legacy Society recognizes and honors individuals and families who, through their estate plans, have established a planned gift of any size to benefit the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley.

These future gifts can take many forms, such as a bequest through a will or personal trust or one of several charitable life-income plans.

Many supporters say they wish they could give more to the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley but cannot afford to give more than they already are now. Planned gifts in particular allow many donors to provide support at a level higher than would otherwise be possible, even while receiving income for life and tax benefits.

How to Join

The following types of commitments, confirmed in writing, qualify you for membership in The Robert R. Smith Legacy Society:

  • a bequest provision in your Will or revocable trust;
  • a life-income gift that names the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley as a remainder beneficiary;
  • a gift or assignment of qualified retirement plan asset such as an IRA, 401(k) or 403(b);
  • a gift of life insurance.

If you have already included the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley in a bequest or other planned gift, we hope you will let us know in writing. Your willingness to be listed as a member of The Robert R. Smith Legacy Society encourages others to follow your example.

We acknowledge and respect those who wish to remain anonymous, but we urge you to let us know of your plans on a confidential basis in any case. It supports planning for the future of our chapter.

Of course, if you have not yet included the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley in your plans and you would like to explore the best options for you and your family, do not hesitate to contact us. We would be glad to assist you on a confidential basis and without any obligation.

Benefits of Membership

In an effort to preserve your legacy for the purpose it is intended, we have chosen a few simple ways to recognize your commitment. Upon notification of inclusion of our chapter in your planned gift, a letter will be sent from the Executive Director and Board Chair thanking the new member and explaining the benefits.

  • Name of member will be listed on the Wall of Honor in the chapter lobby.
  • Name included on Legacy Donor Honor Roll in Annual Report and on Web site.
  • Recognition and pin presented to legacy donor at next Annual Meeting and Awards Celebration.
  • 2 complimentary tickets to Annual Meeting and Awards Celebration.
  • 2 complimentary tickets to Annual Cabaret and Cuisine.
  • Invitation to be part of the Legacy Advisory Council which will meet annually for sharing of programs and initiatives.

The greatest benefit of belonging to The Robert R. Smith Legacy Society is the satisfaction of knowing that your long-range plans will help our chapter continue to respond to disasters and emergencies and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
